Palomar Defeats Riverside 8-1 to Take Command in Super Regionals

SAN MARCOS, CA (5/9/2025) -- No. 3 seed Palomar College came out on top in a dominant 8-1 victory over No. 6 seed Riverside City College in Game 3 of the 2025 3C2A Southern California Super Regionals. After Riverside went ahead in the top of the first inning, the Comets quickly regained control, knocking the Tigers' ace, Erik Rodriguez, out of the game by the fifth inning and continuing to build on their lead.

Riverside struck first, with Ian Nguyen hitting a solo home run in the top of the first inning to put the Tigers ahead 1-0. However, Palomar's response was swift. Drake Cobb drove in Braedon Peterson-Cheek with a double to tie the game in the fourth, and the Comets took the lead for good in the fifth with Carter Jorissen scoring on a single by Jacob Loving. The sixth inning saw Palomar pour it on with six runs, highlighted by a 3-RBI performance from Cobb and a 2-RBI single from Loving.

On the mound, Ian Mowad was superb, delivering 7 innings of 1-run ball while striking out 9. Riverside struggled to find answers against Mowad, managing only 7 hits in the game. Jacob Imoto came on in relief, completing the game with 2 perfect innings to seal the win.

Rodriguez, the Riverside ace, was knocked out after 5 innings, having allowed 6 runs (all earned) on 7 hits. The Comets continued to pile on runs in the following innings, showcasing their offensive depth.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. in a must-win situation for Riverside. If Riverside forces a deciding game, an if-necessary Game 3 will be played 40 minutes following the conclusion of the morning game.
