Comets give back for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

SAN MARCOS, CA (9/26/2022) -- Over the weekend Palomar Baseball gave back to the community by volunteering for the Mitchell Thorp Foundation at the Grand Slam 4 Mitchell event. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and with a close connection to the organization, head coach Ben Adams thought it would be a great opportunity for the team to give back.

Adams and assistant coach Jeff Doyle coached the Thorp kids when they were young. Doyle coached Mitchell since he coaches with Brad Thorp, Mitchell's father. Adams coached his brother, Matt, in travel ball after that, so the Comet baseball family knows the Thorps well.

Mitchell, a lover of the game of baseball, tragically lost his life on November 19, 2008 to an undiagnosed illness. To carry on his legacy, the Thorp family created the Mitchell Thorp Foundation which has the goal of supporting families whose children are suffering from life-threatening illnesses, diseases and disorders.

The Grand Slam 4 Mitchell is a travel baseball tournament held throughout North County where 7U-14U teams compete. Last year over 60 youth baseball teams participated in the tournament. All the proceeds from the tournament go to families whose children suffer from life-threatening illnesses.

Palomar baseball assisted with ticketing, running the snack bars and umpiring at Bradley Park and Mission Sports Park.

Well done Comets!
