Former Comet pitcher signs free-agent deal with White Sox

SAN MARCOS, CA (7/14/2021) -- Everhett Hazelwood, former Comet pitcher, has signed a free-agent deal with the Chicago White Sox following the Major League Baseball draft. 

A graduate of Norco High School, Hazelwood came to Palomar in 2017. In his first season with the Comets, he appeared in 17 games, starting just one. In 24.2 innings pitched, he allowed 19 runs on 35 hits and recorded 31 strikeouts and had an ERA of 6.20. His sophomore season, Hazelwood started in 11 games finishing the season with a 6-1 record. He pitched 64 innings, allowing 28 runs on 51 hits and recorded 69 strikeouts. He totaled a 3.38 ERA. His sophomore season he was the SoCal Player of the Week through the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association after a six-strikeout, three-hit game against Southwestern College. 

After Palomar, Hazelwood transferred to the University of Kansas. Starting in 16 games in his career, he pitched 75.2 innings and allowed 56 runs on 75 hits. He recorded 80 strikeouts and ended his career with an ERA of 6.42. During the 2021 season, he had 53 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched. In his first season with the Jayhawks, he was named the Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week after a 12-strikeout, six-inning performance at Charleston Southern University.
