Palomar women run to 12th in SoCal finals, qualify for state meet

CERRITOS (11-01-2018) / (UPDATED 11-02-2018) – Palomar's women's cross country team qualified for the CCCAA State Championships on Nov. 18 at Woodward Park in Fresno by placing 12th among 26 teams in Friday's Southern California finals at Don Knabe Regional Park.

Sophomore Hannah Lopez led the qualifying effort by the Comets as she ran to a 38th-place finish among 164 scoring runners (39th overall among all 177 runners in the field) with a 19:38.0 time over the 5-kilometer course.

Other scorers for the Palomar women were Cassandra Ramos (second for the Comets and 67th among scoring runners (and 71st overall in the race) with a 20:27.6 time; Maia Chaffin (third for the Comets and 77th among scoring runners (82nd overall) in 20:44.5; Jolie Beentjes (fourth for the Comets and 86th among scoring runners (86th overall) in 21:06.5; and Brianna Frain (fifth for the Comets and 89th among scoring runners (96th overall) in 21:16.5.

Palomar runners who displaced opposing scoring runners in the race were Lessli Maldonado (sixth for the Comets and 90 th among scoring runners (and 97th overall), who was timed in 21:17.7; and Mila Beentjes (sixth for the Comets and 101st overall) with a 21:41.1 time.

Brenda Rosales Coria of Los Angeles Harbor won the race in 17:51.1. Harbor won the Southern California team championship with 53 points, followed by Mt. SAC I second place with 110 points and Glendale in third with 122 points.

Palomar scored 357 points in finishing in 12th place as 14 teams form Southern California qualified to run at Fresno.

Mario Travino was the lone Palomar runner to qualify for the state meet in the men's race, finishing 78th among 190 scoring runners (and among 193 entries overall) by running 4.0 miles in 21:19.5. Calvador Capetillo of Mt. SAC won the men's race in 19:01.3.

Mt. SAC captured the men's team title with 59 points followed by El Camino in second place with 97 points and San Diego Mesa third with 130 points. The Comets totaled 775 points in finishing 28th.
