Comets rock the Dome but fall to Spartans

SAN MARCOS, CA (10/19/2021) -- On Friday night, the state-ranked MiraCosta Spartans entered the Dome with nothing to fear. The Comets had another idea. The stands were filled with fans for the first time cheering on daughters, sisters and friends. The Dome was rocking. Palomar came out hot swinging and had a 3-0 lead before the Spartans realized they were going to have to work for their win. Going almost point-for-point, the Spartans ended up on top with a score of 25-21 in set one and continued to roll into set two, winning 25-17. The Comets, in a must-win third set, found the fire they needed. Courtney Hoffman and Casey Widdoss went to work and pushed the Spartans to the limit. The Spartans ultimately had the last word when they won the set 28-26. Hoffman recorded 10 kills for a hitting percentage of .350 and Widdoss had eight kills on the night. Setters Alana Lacangan and Kenna Broach had 14 and 11 assists, respectively. Playing libero again, Sophia Bolivar finished the night with 14 digs.

The Comets are now 5-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play. They hit the road to face Grossmont College on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and return to the Dome on Friday to face San Diego Mesa College at 5 p.m.
