Comets swing past Knights in home opener

SAN MARCOS, CA (2/20/2020) – Palomar faced San Diego City College in their first home match of the season and won 8-1.

Due to an incomplete lineup by City, Palomar began the match 3-0. In the doubles, No. 1 team Cali Smith and Mila Beentjes were down 7-0 before rallying to score three points. In the end they lost 8-3 to City's Zelma Downes and Kiyara Long. Clare Redick and Kathy Henderson defeated City's Leeannmarie Manual and Leilani Uyeda 8-3 in the No. 2 match. Comet's Grace Powell and Sarah Elizondo had the day off.

Smith was able to collect herself and come back and defeat Downes 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles. Henderon defeated Long 6-3, 6-2 in their singles match. In the No. 3 match, Beentjes defeated Manual 6-1, 6-1. Redick defeated Uyeda 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles.

The Comets improve to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The women will face Grossmont College Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. on the road.
