Comets dazzle against Jags

SAN MARCOS, CA (1/17/2024) -- The Palomar College Women's Basketball team improved to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play with a 110-0 win over Southwestern College on Wednesday night. 

The Comets scored 51 points the first quarter, the most in recent memory, before laying off the gas the remainder of the game. Npth freshman Neveah Mageo and freshman forward Brianna Matthews led the Comets with 18 points. Mageo went 7-10 in the field and 4-7 at the three-point line, while Matthews was 9-12 in the paint. Matthews finished with seven rebounds, two blocks, one assist and a steal. Mageo had five steals on the night. Sophomore guard Lacee Silva was the ultimate teammate dishing out seven assists, alon with four steals and 12 rebounds in 23 minutes played. Freshmen Dayvis Key and Brooke Quintana finished with 13 points each, while sophomore Faith Brinkman finished with 11. Freshman Angelina De Leon rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10. 

As a team, the Comets finished with season-high rebounds (60, 33 offensive), assists (31), steals (34) and a season-low of 10 turnovers. Southwestern committed 44 turnovers, which the Comets converted into 67 points. Palomar shot 50% in the field going 46-92 and was 15-51 beyond the arc. 

Palomar, who checked in at No. 7 in the latest poll and No. 4 in the South, will continue conference play with a home game against Imperial Valley College on Friday night in the Dome for a 5 p.m. tip.
