Comets climbing way to top of polls after two big wins on the road
SAN MARCOS, CA (12/31/2019) – Women's basketball is currently sitting atop the PCAC with a 13-1 record. The Comets are also T-1st in the South with Moorpark (12-1) and ranked No. 3 in the state behind Moorpark (No. 1) and San Joaquin Delta (No. 2).
The women finished out 2019 with a 64-56 win over No. 7 Mt. San Antonio College on Dec. 16 and an 80-68 win Long Beach City College on Dec. 20. Julie Saelee led all Comets with 22 points against Long Beach and Aaliyah Taylor posted 14 points. Taylor had seven rebounds and three steals. Dee Dee Valenzuela had 12 points. Mackenna Gentry recorded six assists and two steals. The Comets did an excellent job containing Long Beach's Donavion Huskey, who averages 22 points and 19 rebounds a game. Against Palomar she had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Palomar will play Riverside City College on Thursday, Jan. 2 at the Santa Ana College Classic. The last time the two teams faced, Taylor Williams had 18 points. Nikki Mayoral had seven rebounds and eight assists to along with six points. As a team, the Comets allowed the Tigers to score 20 points in the paint. The Comets caused 20 turnovers to score 32 points.
The women wrap up their non-conference play with the Santa Ana College Classic this week. They begin conference play on Jan. 10 when they travel to Grossmont College for a 7 p.m. tip.
