No. 1 Comets top seed for SoCal Regionals

SAN MARCOS (4/29/2023) – The Palomar College softball team has parlayed a one-loss regular season into a No. 1 seeding for the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regionals. 

The Comets (36-1), ranked No. 1 in the state since Feb. 22, will host a best-of-3 first-round series beginning May 5 at Bradley Park against the winner of Tuesday's play-in game between No. 16 seed Allan Hancock (22-14) and No. 17 seed Chaffey (25-14). Game 1 will start at 2 p.m., and Game 2 on May 6 will begin at 12 noon with a Game 3 to follow if necessary. 

Palomar claimed its ninth consecutive Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship with a 12-0 record. The five-time state champion Comets are taking an 11-game win streak into the postseason after a 25-0 start. 

Rounding out the top four seeds announced Saturday for the SoCal Regionals are No. 2 Mt. San Antonio (35-5), No. 3 Cypress (34-6) and No. 4 Cerritos (27-12). Mt. SAC, champions of the South Coast Conference, will host the winner of a play-in game Tuesday between No. 15 San Diego Mesa (18-13) and No. 18 San Bernardino Valley (20-16); Orange Empire Conference champion Cypress is hosting No. 14 Pasadena City (24-16); and South Coast runner-up Cerritos is hosting No. 13 L.A. Mission (25-15). 

The eight winners who survive the first round will advance to the second round of regionals May 12-13, and those four survivors will advance to the eight-team CCCAA state tournament May 18-21 at Mt. SAC.
