Fifth inning, two outs, time to rally: Comets battle back to beat Delta, San Mateo

BAKERSFIELD, CA (5/20/2019) -- In both games today, Palomar battled back to beat San Joaquin Delta 6-4 in game one and College of San Mateo 3-1 in game two to advance to the CCCAA State Championship final.

The Comets were down 2-0 going into the fifth inning against Delta. After the inning, they were up 5-2. Allie Hughen was perfect on the day going 2-2 with one RBI. Megan Wachholtz (2-4) came up big in the fifth inning with a double and again in the sixth inning with a stolen base. She drove in three runs. McKenna Crawford (1-3) also had a double.

Catalina Aguilar pitched four innings and faced 18 batters. She had two strikeouts, one walk and gave up five hits and two runs. Hughen pitched the remainder of the game and had three strikeouts, two walks and gave up two hits and two runs against her 15 batters.


In game two, Jillian Zamora (2-3) got on base with a hit and Sarah Fisher (2-3) came up and hit the ball to right center field in the fifth inning. The outfielder dropped it and Zamora scored to tie the game at 1-1, and Fisher was credited a triple. Megan Wachholtz (1-4) then singled up the third base line to bring Fisher home. Kylie Pignone (1-2) then singled, followed by a Kendall Kates (1-3) RBI double.

Allie Hughen pitched all seven innings and had four strikeouts and three walks. She gave up five hits and one run against 30 batters.

Palomar battled their way through the loser's bracket and will face southern rival, Mt. SAC, for the championship round tomorrow at 11 a.m.
