Comets drop first game to Mt. SAC, survive against Fullerton

BAKERSFIELD, CA (5/18/2019) – After yesterday's win put Palomar into the winner's bracket, the Comets faced off against Mt. SAC and lost 4-2 in eight innings.

The Comets struggled to get anything going in the first two innings, but in the third, they finally got the tying run across the plate. Kylie Pignone (2-5) had a leadoff single, followed by a double by Megan Wachholtz (1-3). Sarah Fisher (2-2) was then intentionally walked. Allie Hughen (2-4) had an RBI single to bring Pignone home.

It wasn't until the seventh inning until the Comets got their second run, thanks to Kendall Kates (0-4).

Hughen pitched 7.1 innings and faced 32 batters. She had six hits, four runs which included two home runs, and seven strikeouts.

Following their loss to Mt. SAC, Palomar turned around to play Fullerton in an elimination game. The Comets beat the Hornets 2-1 in seven innings.

Sarah Fisher (1-1) had a solo home run in the first inning to get the Comets on the board early. She was then intentionally walked two times and walked in her last at-bat.

Rylee Penrod (1-3) had a double in the fourth inning to bring pinch runner Katie Bananal home.

Kendall Kates was 2-4 and Samantha Renteria was also 2-4. Jillian Zamora was 1-2.

Catalina Aguilar pitched five innings where she faced 18 batters. She gave up one run and four hits and had one strikeout. Allie Hughen pitched the last two innings and faced eight batters. She gave up two hits and had one strikeout.

The Comets will play again tomorrow at 3 p.m. They will face the winner of the 10 a.m. game.
