Comets show new life at Labor Day tournament

CHULA VISTA, CA (9/3/2022) -- Coming off a down season for Palomar College men's water polo, the Comets showed new life at their season-opening tournament held at Southwestern College over the weekend.

The Comets started the tournament off against a strong Cerritos College, where the Falcons took the match 21-12. Regrouping, the Comets back dominate in their second match of the day. Facing Citrus College, Palomar jumped out to a quick 5-3 lead after the first quarter as the team's chemistry began to show. Always communicating with one another in the water, the Comets pulled together to play as a united team and defeated the Owls 16-12. On day two of the tournament, they faced San Diego State University's club team where the Comets easily won 17-8. Facing another tough team, Palomar faced Merced College for their fourth and final match of the tournament. It was Merced who had just a little more winning the hard-fought battle 18-14.

Head Coach Mike Mulvey worked hard in the offseason to bring in new recruits and with the help of big transfers, the work is paying off. Sophomore Torin Carss, a transfer from Grossmont College, recorded 10 goals and 14 steals in the four matches and racked up seven assists. Freshman Arleigh Williams had six goals, nine steals and seven assists, while freshman John Farner led the team with 11 goals scored.

Palomar moves to 2-2 on the season and will host a mini tournament on Saturday at home. They will face San Diego Miramar College at 8:30 a.m. followed by Citrus College at 1:30 p.m.
