Seven Comets named to All-Southern League team

SAN MARCOS, CA (12/12/2023) -- Seven Palomar College Comet football players were named to the SCFA All-Southern League Team, including sophomore offensive lineman Jake Waltman, the team's only First Team selection.

Waltman, a force to be reckoned with, started every game for the Comets this season. On the right side, Waltman blocked and opened gaps for the Comet run game this season. He currently has nine NCAA Division I offers on the table at the time of writing. On pass plays, his technique proved effective, allowing zero sacks on the season. Jude Steffen, another sophomore offensive lineman, was named to the Second Team, as well as sophomore running back Omarion Ireland. Steffan and Waltman played on the right side all season and proved to be an effective pairing. Ireland rushed for 596 yards in conference play on 114 carries. He scored six touchdowns for the Comets and fumbled just one time. His best conference game was against Mt. San Jacinto College on Oct. 28. He had 16 carries for 129 yards with a long of 67. The next week he scored two touchdowns against Southwestern College.

On the defensive side of the ball, linemen Barrett Brennan, Jacob Sisson and Henry Davis III, along with linebacker Jaiden Letua, were named to the Second Team. Brennan finished the conference schedule with 16 total tackles, 10 solo. He had one sack for four yards. He had a season-best four tackles against Grossmont College on Sept. 30 and had three solo tackles against Southwestern College on Nov. 4. He also had a fumble recovery against San Diego Mesa College. Sisson totaled 20 tackles in the conference stretch of the season and finished with three sacks for 47 total yards. His best game this season was against Southwestern when he finished with three tackles, a strip sack for 29 yards and a tackle for loss. In the seven conference games, Davis III finished with 13 total tackles and 0.5 sacks for four yards. He had four tackles against Mt. San Jacinto. At linebacker, Letua was arguably one of the best defenders this season. He finished the conference season with 33 total tackles, 24 of them solo, and had 1.5 sacks for 13 yards. He had a season-high nine tackles against Saddleback College on Oct. 14. He recorded one sack against San Diego Mesa for 10 yards.
