Ogles breaks record again as Comets fall to Rustlers

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (9/10/2022) -- Following a week one win over Victor Valley College, the Comets dropped game two to Golden West College 22-3 on Saturday.

Sophomore placekicker and punter Landon Ogles has once again found himself in the Palomar College Football record book after hitting a 57-yard field goal attempt on Saturday. Ogles broke his previous record of 56-yards, which came last season against Riverside City College.

The Comet offense struggled to get anything going, totaling 128 offensive yards. In the second quarter, the Comets got the ball on the Rustler 47-yard line with two minutes to go. After a quick three and out, Ogles booted the ball 44-yards to get the ball downed at the 1-yard line by the special teams unit. Palomar's defense needed a big stop down 10-0 with 38 seconds left.

And a big stop they got.

Going three and out, the Rustlers punted the ball 34 yards to Isaiah Davis who had a two-yard return to get the Comets to the Rustler 40-yard line. With two seconds on the clock, the Comet field goal unit rushed the field. Ogles's ball sailed through the uprights as time expired and the Comets finished the half down seven.

It was all Comet defense from that point. Freshmen Syrr Jaden Barnes led all Comets with 11 total tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss totaling seven yards. Sophomore Masato Thompson racked up five solo tackles and recorded one tackle for loss for two yards. Sophomore Rickie Davis Jr. and freshman Jayden Ireland both recorded picks, for 13 and nine yards, respectively. Ireland also recorded a 37-yard pick-six last week against Victor Valley.

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Thomas Fishburne went 11-19 totaling 77 yards. Sophomore running back Dorian Lewis had 15 yards on six carries. Freshman Jose Ayala led the receiving core with five receptions for 35 yards with a long of 13 yards.

The Comets move to 1-1 on the season and will host Southwestern College on Saturday, Sept. 17 for their home opener. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
