Comets finding new homes at next level

SAN MARCOS, CA (4/20/2022) -- With the 2021 season in the rearview mirror, players all over the country have been committing to programs and beginning spring workouts at their new schools and while some have found a new home, others are waiting for their perfect fit. 

This year, 10 Palomar football players have committed their talents to the next level. Headlining the 2021 transfer class are receiver Malachi Russell and running back Tawee Walker. Malachi and Walker are walking on to the University of Oregon and Oklahoma University, respectively. Both first-team all-conference selections, Russell (El Camino) had 409 yards and five touchdowns in six games this season. He had a season-high 160 yards against Mt. San Antonio College on nine receptions. Walker (Centennial, AZ) dominated the run game for the Comets this season averaging 76.1 yards a game to receive a 1st Team, Offense award. He finished with 761 yards and seven touchdowns. He recorded 176 yards against Cerritos College on 23 carries. Walker also picked up 189 receiving yards. He had 44 yards against San Diego Mesa on two receptions for a long of 35 yards. 

You can watch these two in their spring games this weekend. Both Oregon and Oklahoma will be playing at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Wide receiver Brandon Johnson is headed to Idaho State University in the Big Sky Conference. Johnson was quarterback Zeke Payne's go-to this season for the long ball and his efforts paid off earning him a 2nd Team, Offense award. Johnson finished the season with 544 yards in 10 games and seven touchdowns. This season, he had four games where his longest receptions were over 50 yards, including a 75-yard reception from Payne against El Camino for a touchdown. He finished that game with 119 yards on four receptions and two touchdowns.

Lance Desorbo, Sid Weddington, Luke Manos, and Jonas Woods are also taking their talents to the next level. DeSorbo (DL), Weddington (DL), and Woods (OL) will be attending DI schools. Heading to Morehead State University, Weddington recorded 41 tackles and two sacks in 10 games for the Comets, earning the 2nd Team, Defense honor. Weddington's three tackl.es against El Camino were one sack for 10 yards and two tackles for loss totaling 13 yards. He had a season-high seven tackles against Victor Valley and had six against Chaffey College. Woods will be heading to Merrimack College. He was the lone first-team all-conference offensive line selection for the Comets this past season. DeSorbo recorded 23 tackles, two sacks for six yards, and five tackles for loss totaling 25 yards. DeSorbo is heading to Wagner College in New York.
