Comets fall to Cerritos in 68-49 loss

CERRITOS, CA (11/9/2019) – In their final road game of the season, Palomar lost to Cerritos College 68-49.

Palomar scored with 4:47 left in the first quarter on a 2-yard pass from Rodney Thompson to Kyran Griffin to take a 7-6 lead over Cerritos. The Comets scored twice in the second quarter and at half they trailed the Falcons 41-21.

The Comets put up 14 points in the third, but Cerritos put up another 27. Palomar was able to stop Cerritos from scoring at all.

Thompson was 24-45 throwing for 219 yards with four touchdowns passes. He rushed for 77 yards with a long of 53 and had two touchdowns. Damon Wigand had 15 yards on five carries. In the receiving game, Logan Gamble had 62 yards on six receptions. Kyran Griffin had 37 yards on four receptions with two touchdown receptions.

Wesley Huizor had a 65-yard interception on the night, which he returned for a touchdown in the second quarter and Ben Lozada also had an interception, but with not return. Kameron Camp had 11 tackles with two sacks for seven yards and 2.5 tackles-for-loss for eight yards. Vavega Sialoi had nine tackles with one tackle-for-loss for four yards. Huizor had seven tackles and half a tackle-for-loss for one yard. Tyrus Hodgins had four tackles, one sack for four yards and 2.5 tackles-for-loss for seven yards.

Palomar put up 342 offensive yards to Cerritos's 645 and ran 81 plays. The Comets averaged 4.2 yards a play. Palomar had 219 passing yards and 123 rushing yards. Preston Dennard had six punts for 180 yards on the night.

The Comets are now 2-7 overall and 0-4 in conference. They will face San Diego Mesa College on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. at Escondido High School for the Alumni Recognition Game.
