Football Week Two Preview

This week's matchup pits Palomar against the Southwestern Jaguars. Last season Southwestern beat Palomar twice including the post-season Beach Bowl game where Palomar lost 28-24. Because Palomar lost twice last season, they are seeking revenge going into this week's game. 

Palomar is coming off a 30-19 win over Moorpark College and Southwestern is coming off a 14-4 loss to San Diego Mesa College.

In last week's game, Palomar put up 295 yards of total offense against Moorpark, compared to Southwestern's 203 against San Diego Mesa. Palomar had 235 passing yards and a mere 60 rushing yards. Southwestern had 110 rushing yards and 93 passing yards.

Sophomore quarterback Rodney Thompson threw for 235 yards going 21-35 and rushed for 43 yards on six attempts. Standout receivers for the Comets include freshman Kyran Griffin and sophomore Johnny Armentrout who had 119 and 88 receiving yards, respectively. 

Defensively, the Comets gave up 353 total yards of offense, but countered that with two interceptions by Kobe Dominguez and David Quintanilla. Sophomore linebacker Kameron Camp led the team with nine tackles, followed by Giovanni Herrera and Chris Calhoun with seven tackles each. Tommy Woo had the lone sack for the Comets totaling seven yards.

Southwestern enters the game with a loss to San Diego Mesa. Quarterback Joshua Owen threw for 88 yards and was 7-20. Kevlan Chapman and Deandre Daniels led the team in rushing yards at 46 a piece. Tyler Saikhon and Terry Wright had 34 and 32 receiving yards, respectively.

The Jaguars gave up 267 offensive yards of which 112 were rushing. Josh McCurty had nine total tackles, followed by Larry Matkins with seven. The Jaguars also recorded one sack last week coming from Sekeli Manu for nine yards.

Palomar ran 62 offensive plays and averaged 4.8 yards and Southwestern ran 70 plays averaging 2.7 yards.  

Palomar and Southwestern will face off on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Southwestern College.
