Comets defeat Moorpark 30-19

ESCONDIDO, CA (9/7/2019) – Palomar defeated Moorpark College 30-19 in their season opener.

Offensively, the Comets came out dominantly in the first quarter putting up seven points immediately. Thanks to David Quintanilla's interception on the defensive side, the Comets were able to put up another seven on the board to make it 14-0. Later in the third quarter, Lamar Raboteau punched in the next touchdown after Noah Lopez kicked a field goal. Damon Wigand got the ball in the end zone on a 1-yard run for Palomar's final touchdown of the game.

The Comets blocked two point-after attempts and had one blocked of their own.

Palomar had a third-down efficiency of 21 percent (4 of 19) and fourth down efficiency of 75 percent (3 of 4). Palomar's total offense was 295 yards, 235 passing and 60 rushing. The defense allowed 353 yards of Moorpark offense, 253 passing and 100 rushing.

Quarterback Rodney Thompson threw for 235 yards and had 21 completions on the night. He also rushed for 43 yards, most of the team.

Kyran Griffin had 119 receiving yards on seven receptions and a 38-yard reception from Thompson in the fourth quarter to set up the final touchdown for the Comets. Johnny Armentrout had 88 receiving yards on eight receptions before he was ejected from the game in the fourth quarter after receiving two personal fouls. Logan Gamble had 22 receiving yards.

Kobe Dominguez had an interception of his own in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Comets. Tommy Woo had a huge sack for a seven-yard loss as well as two tackles for loss totaling 10 yards. Chris Calhoun had seven total tackles on the night including two for loss totaling 12 yards.

Palomar is now 1-0 after tonight's win and will be on the road next week to face Southwestern at 6 p.m.
