Bob Vetter, who compiled a 542-393 record with eight conference championships in 24 years as Palomar's head coach, guided the Comets to second in the California State Tournament in his final season of 2005. 2022 will mark his seventh year back in the program.

Vetter, who was inducted into the California Community College Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007, had a 646-477-7 record as a college head coach. His teams at Palomar won five Pacific Coast Conference titles in his last eight seasons as the Comets' head coach.

As a player, Vetter was the starting center fielder on the 1973 Cal Western team that won the NAIA World Series. He returned to his alma mater (which had been renamed United States International University) as the youngest college head coach in the nation and, after a highly-successful run with the Gulls, spent the 1982 season as an assistant at Palomar under Jim Clayton. Vetter was named Palomar's head coach prior to the 1983 season.

Vetter's marquee team at USIU was the 1978 club, which was in a transition year from NAIA to NCAA Division I and thus ineligible for the postseason. That team defeated both San Diego State with Tony Gwynn and a University of Arizona team that went on to win the College World Series.

Vetter's two children are graduates of Oklahoma University and the University of Washington. He retired as Chair of the Palomar College Department of Kinesiology, Health and Recreation following the 2014-15 academic year.
