Comets sweep Griffins for PCAC title

SAN MARCOS, CA (4/23/2022) -- After two close games earlier in the week, the Comets flexed their offensive muscles to sweep the series in a 15-8 victory against Grossmont College for their 17th PCAC title in program history.

Recording only two extra-base hits the entire game, a rarity for the Comets this season, they got the job done on singles and walks showing patience at the plate to execute the offensive game plan. A 9-run sixth inning pushed the Comets to the top as Grossmont walked five runs across the plate. Two runs came from wild pitches while another came by way of a hit by pitch with nowhere to put the batter. The Comets finished the inning with nine runs on two hits, one of which was a Caden Szuba single to score Kyle Harvey who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

The Comets seem to have settled into a pitching rotation that's working. Dylan Delvecchio got the start on Tuesday, but it was Christian Wood who got the win for his first decision of the season. Austin Schroeder got his 10th save of the season. Logan Parker got the nod on Thursday down in El Cajon and pitched 7.0 innings in which he recorded zero walks and improved to 9-1 on the season. Down 4-3 heading into the eighth, the Comets scored four runs in their half of the inning to take the lead. Grossmont came back to score two more runs in their half. Schroeder came in to close the deal and picked up save number 11 on the season, still a state-tieing best. In the series finale, Ethan Sally started on the mound for the Comets and 4.2 innings where he allowed two runs on three hits. Chris Parluseki was the winning pitcher and moved to 4-0 on the season.

Palomar moves to 28-9 overall and 18-4 in PCAC play. They will round out their conference schedule with a series against San Diego Mesa College beginning on Tuesday in San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
