Comets rally to defeat Glendale

SAN MARCOS, CA (1/31/2020) – In their third game of the season, Palomar faced Glendale College and won 9-7 in nine innings.

The Comets got an early lead in the third inning when the Vaquero pitching staff loaded the bases after Evan Ianniciello was walked. After a Comet strikeout, Derek Bostater was walked and Cameron Rowles walked across the plate. With the bases still loaded with two outs, Micah Anselmo was hit by a pitch and the second Comet run was walked in by Jaisten Cabatbat. A pop out to the shortstop ended the inning.

Palomar allowed six runs in the sixth inning for the Glendale to take a 6-2 lead. In their half of the inning, the Comets got three of their runs back. Another run was walked across the plate followed by a fielder's choice in which the Vaqueros chose the out at second as a run scored. With runners on the corners, Bostater had a base hit to score Rowles.

In the eighth, Rowles hit his first home run of the season for run number five. With runners on first and second, Noah Hemphill grounded out to the pitcher in sacrifice to advance the runners. On a wild pitch, Cabatbat scored and Ianniciello advanced to third. After a walk and a strikeout and runners on the corners, Anselmo doubled to bring in the final runs for the Comets.

The Comets started Jacob Widener, a lefty from San Marcos High School. In the five innings he pitched, he gave up one hit, which came in the fifth inning, walked four and struck out three. Trevor Riley then allowed one hit, three runs and walked two. Dane Padrnos, who was credited the win against Golden West last week, then pitched the remainder of the sixth. He gave up three hits, three tuns and walked one. The Comets went with Dimitri Ivetic in the seventh where he walked one batter. Closer Gavin Kinney allowed one hit, one run and had one struck out in the final two innings. Kinney was the winning pitcher and is 1-0 on the season.

Palomar improved to 2-1 with the win.
