MVP on Palomar's 1974 team and likely the best pitcher in the program's first 30 years. Switching from first base to pitching between his freshman and sophomore seasons, Johnson went 9-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 1974, was drafted by the Angels but suffered a career-ending arm injury in his first pro appearance, for Idaho Falls, and never pitched again. Brother of former Palomar and San Jose State baseball infielder / football kicker Randy Johnson, who went on to start at third base in the Major Leagues for the Atlanta Braves, has been a Major League scout / field coordinator / assistant to the general manager since his retirement as a player, is currently a pro scout for the Detroit Tigers and was a charter Palomar Hall of Fame inductee.
