Palomar wrestlers win SoCal Regional Championship

WHITTIER (12-01-2018) – Palomar won the Southern California Regional wrestling championship on Saturday at Rio Hondo College, led by three individual champions and 11 qualifiers for CCCAA State Championships next Friday and Saturday at Cerritos College.

Led by weight-class champions Raul Ortiz at 133 pounds, Mace Anderson at 165 and Nick Kimball at 184, coach Brody Barrios' Comets outdistanced runner-up Cerritos 152 points to 133 points.

The Comets and Falcons were followed in team scoring by third-place Mt. SAC (116 points), fourth-place Bakersfield (94.5 points), fifth-place West Hills-Lemoore (61.5 points), sixth-place Santa Ana (58 points), seventh-place East Los Angeles (50.5 points), eighth-place Cuesta (40 points), ninth-place Rio Hondo (35 points), 10th-place Moorpark (34.5 points) and 11th-place Victor Valley (8 points).

Ortiz, who was seeded first, decisioned teammate and top-seeded Erick Marquez 2-1 in the championship match at 133.

Anderson pinned Cerritos' Kenneth Kirk in 6:20 in the championship match at 165 pounds.

And Kimball decisioned Cerritos' Jarron Nunez 13-4 in the finals at 184.

Second-place finishers for Palomar, besides Marquez, were Isaac Guerrero at 125 pounds, Eric Reyes at 141 pounds and Cameron Cox at 174, while Layce Barnake finished third at 184 and Kalani Sorensen placed fourth at 197.

174 Pounds -- Cameron Cox (Dos Pueblos High / Goleta, CA), 2nd place

184 Pounds -- Nick Kimble (San Marcos High), 1st place

184 Pounds -- Layce Barnake (San Pasqual High), 3rd place

197 Pounds -- Kalani Sorensen (San Marcos High), 4th place
