Palomar wrestlers stun traditional power Mt. SAC in 39-6 rout

SAN MARCOS (10-24-2018) – Coach Brody Barrios' words after Palomar's 39-6 rout of Mt. SAC in the teams' Southern California Wrestling Alliance Southwest Conference match on Wednesday night at The Dome said it all.

"I never expected this," Barrios said after the Comets jumped all over the Mounties, who were coming off a second-place finish to defending state community champion Fresno City College in Saturday's Meathead Movers Invitational at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, the prestigious tournament in which his Palomar team finished fifth.

"We were on fire. We brain-washed them (at practice) on Monday and Tuesday, but I never expected this."

The Comets opened up a 39-0 lead after the first nine bouts before Mt. SAC finally got on the scoreboard with a pin victory in the final match of the night, in the 285-pound division, to avoid a shutout.

Asked if he was aware of anyone dominating the Mounties to the extent the Comets dominated them on Wednesday, Barrios answered "No, never. Not Mt. SAC. Not ever."

In Wednesday's match, Palomar got pin victories at 133 pounds from Raul Ortiz, who had taken second in that weight class in the Meathead Movers Invitational on Saturday; from Mace Anderson, who had won the 165-pound title on Saturday; and from Nick Kimball, who had finished third Saturday at 184 pounds.

Ortiz pinned the Mounties' Nathan Barragan on Wednesday with one second remaining in overtime, in 7:59. Anderson pinned Matthew Mejia in 6:41. And Kimball pinned Colby Huynh in 1:43.

Eric Reyes (141 pounds), Nathan Navida (149 pounds), Jessy Diaz (157 pounds), Cameron Cox I(174 pounds), and Kalani Sorensen (197 pounds) all won by decision against the Mounties.

Miguel Diaz had opened the night's card with a forfeit victory at 125 points when Mt. SAC's Zachary Cunningham didn't make weight, a bad omen for the Mounties to begin the evening.

Mt. SAC wasted no time whatsoever in leaving The Dome and heading back up the freeway to Walnut without even saying "good-by".
