Comets score first 9 goals take over 2nd place with win vs. G-House

SAN DIEGO (10-10-2018) – Palomar's women's water polo team took over undisputed second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference standings on Wednesday at the Kroc Center, taking a big early lead and continuing on to a 9-7 victory over Grossmont College.

San Diego Mesa continues to lead the conference with a 4-0 record, while coach Mandy Simon's Comets are 3-1 in conference matches and Grossmont slips into third place at 3-2.

Southwestern is alone in fourth place with a 1-4 record and San Diego Miramar sits in fifth place at 0-4.

Emma Thomas, a sophomore out of Fallbrook High School and Palomar's statistical leader all season long, again led the Comets, scoring 4 goals and tacking on 3 steals.

Rena Richardson, a sophomore from Fallbrook High, tallied 2 goals and added a steal. Kelly Rowan, a sophomore from Temecula Great Oak High, had a goal, 3 assists and the Comets' only block of the match.

Katelyn Humphrey, a freshman from Elsinore High School, contributed the other Palomar goal and also had 3 steals. Haley Balch, a freshman from Oceanside High, scored the Comets' other goal.

Palomar scored the first nine goals of the afternoon and by the time Grace Martin finally tallied a goal for the G-House to make the score 9-1 at the end of the first period, the match was for all intents and purposes over.

Ciara Webb-Martin, a freshman out of Ramona High School, assisted on Palomar's first three goals, the first by Humphrey and the next two by Richardson, putting the Comets in front early 3-0.

Thomas scored the next four goals, the first three on assists from Webb-Martin and  her fourth goal unassisted, upping the Palomar lead to 7-0.

Rowan and Balch added unassisted goals to make it 9-0.

Taylor Bacerra, a freshman out of Rancho Buena Vista High, recorded 6 saves in goal.
