Palomar men's squad splashes past Southwestern 20-9

CHULA VISTA (10-03-2018) – Palomar's freshman-dominated men's water polo team had its way from start to finish with host Southwestern in the teams' Pacific Coast Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon at the new $52 million Southwestern College Wellness and Aquatics complex.

Playing in one of the Jaguars' two newly-opened Olympic size pools, coach Kody Moffatt's Comets won big 20-9 to advance to 4-1 in PCAC play as Kevin McCollum, a freshman 2-meter attacker out of Fallbrook High School, scored five goals and passed off for two assists.

McCollum, who leads the Comets in points (47) and goals (37), was assisted on all five of his goals by Scotty Richards, a freshman from El Camino High School.

Richards also scored three goals.

The other multiple-goal scorers for Palomar were Nate Taylor, a freshman from Temecula Valley High, with three goals; and Bryce Sammons, a freshman from Fallbrook High, with two goals; and Ben Nettles, a freshman out of Vista High, also with two goals.

Goalie Tommy Preston, a sophomore out of Vista High, contributed three assists for Palomar. Zane Bentley, a freshman from Murrieta Mesa High, contributed two assists. Taylor also had two assists.

Terrin Davis, a sophomore from El Camino High, led the Comets in steals with two.

Preston played the first half in the goalie cage and finished with five saves. Dalton DeSpain, a freshman from Mission Hills High, came on in the second half and had 11 saves.

Southwestern slipped to 0-5 in the PCAC.
