McCollum (6 goals), Comets top Mesa, take over 2nd

SAN DIEGO (9-26-2018) – Palomar took over undisputed second place behind Grossmont College in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference men's water polo standings on Wednesday afternoon, winning 15-13 on the road over traditional power San Diego Mesa.

Kevin McCollum, a freshman 2-meter attacker out of Fallbrook High School, was the difference in the game for coach Kody Moffatt's Comets, scoring a game-high six goals and tacking on two steals for good measure.

Sophomore Terrin Davis (El Camino High) scored two goals and led Palomar in steals with four. Freshman Truman Irion (Escondido High) also contributed two goals and added two assists.

Two other Comets also tallied two goals apiece, freshmen Jeremy Paiz (Valley Center High) and Nick Taylor (Temecula Valley High).

Sophomore Thomas Preston (Vista High) went the whole game in the cage and finished with 10 saves.

Grossmont leads the PCAC with a 4-0 record. Palomar is 3-1 in conference (7-7 overall). Mesa, which is in third place, is 2-2.

Palomar will return to action on Friday at the Cerritos College Mini-Tournament.
