Palomar women's team drops a heartbreaker to Grossmont 6-5
SAN MARCOS (9-12-2018) -- Palomar's women's water polo team dropped a certified heartbreaker to Grossmont College on Wednesday at Wallace Memorial Pool, losing to the visiting Griffins 7-6 as the Comets slipped to .500 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference at 1-1.
The Comets took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on an unassisted goal by Katelyn Humphrey but the Griffins scored three goals in the second quarter to go in front 3-1. Palomar then tied the game 3-3 at the half on goals by Rena Richardson and Emma Thomas
But G-House regained the lead on Cami Raley's third-quarter goal and led the rest of the way.
Thomas led Palomar with two goals. Humphrey, Richardson, Maddy Johnson and Haley Belch scored a goal apiece for the Comets, but Palomar was unable to pull even the rest of the afternoon. Humphrey added two steals.
Goalie Taylor Bacerra recorded seven saves for Palomar.
Palomar had opened the conference season with a win over visiting Southwestern College at Wallace Memorial Pool.
Over the weekend, the Comets lost to Golden West, Fullerton and Orange Coast in the Saddleback Tournament. Golden West has won CCCAA women's water polo championship eight times since the first state tournament in 1996.
Thomas scored four goals over the three-game span.
