Women’s Basketball: Historic Season Comes to an End

3-8-18

The Comets fell short in Wednesday's contest against Merced in the Elite 8 tournament, losing 59-61 as it came down to the last 11 seconds of the game. It was a tough third quarter for the Comets only putting up 6 points; however, it was a hard fought game demonstrating the true grit of the Comets on the court. Monica Todd put on an electric performance with a double-double, scoring 29 points with 14 rebounds.

Although the season didn't end like most would have hoped, the Comets still had a jaw-dropping season that all fans and players will remember. The 2017-18 season could be considered the best season in Palomar History for Comets Women's Basketball for it was the first time Palomar has been ranked No.1 and awarded the No.1 seed heading into the State tournament.

Prior to Wednesday's contest, the Comets had only one loss on the season with a near perfect 29-1 record. The Comets were crowned Pacific Coast Conference Champions with their only loss in conference to conference rivals, Mt. San Jacinto. Palomar and MSJC split their conference matchups in some of the most memorable and hard fought games of the season.

The Comets ended the season top 5 in the state in 9 categories, Points (2598), points per game (83.8), FG attempts per game (75.2), 3 pointers made per game (9.9), 3pt attempts per game (31.1), offensive rebounds per game (21.4) total rebounds per game (49.5), rebound margin per game (13.9), and assists per game (20.3).

Head Coach Leigh Marshall led the Comets to a stellar season full of wins in her 4th Coach of the Year performance, guiding 2 players to the All-State steam (Monica Todd 1st team, and Vinessa Perryman 2nd team). The Comets sported one of their best winning streaks of all time with 18 wins in a row, followed by another 11 game winning streak.

The fable of the 2018 Comets will live on reluctantly through all of their fans, players, and coaches, as there is a lot to look forward to heading in to the 2018-2019 season, with 7 returning players and 6 returning redshirts who now have the taste of winning and know the culture of the program.
