Men’s Basketball Wins Nail-Biter, 77-76

2-13-18

In Tuesday night's contest against MiraCosta, the Comets prevailed at the buzzer 77-76 in dramatic fashion. With a comfortable lead nearly all game, the Comets saw that vanish before them as they had to buckle down and hold on to the win in the final seconds of the game.

Leading by 12 with 11:09 remaining in the game (60-48) the Comets stayed steady for another 5 minutes of play leading 69-59 just under 7 minutes. That all vanished as MiraCosta pulled ahead by 3 (76-73) with 24.8 seconds on the clock. Matt Meyers came in clutch as he made a lay-up with 6.1 seconds remaining and was fouled in the process. The free throw was made bringing the Comets back on top 77-76 where the scored remained and the Comets came out victorious.

Offensively, the Comets had 3 players scoring double digits, Jackson Strong (27), Matt Meyers (20), and Jamario Harris (13). Matt Meyers collected a double-double as he paired his 20 points with 13 rebounds going 6-11 from the field, going 1-3 for 3 pointers, and making 7 out of 11 free-throws. Jackson Strong was 8-12 on his field-goal attempts, going 5-8 from the 3 and 6-8 from the penalty line. The Comets as a team shot 46.4% from the field and a solid 40.7% from the 3 with 12 offensive rebounds and 18 assists as a team.

Defensively the Comets made a few outstanding plays late to secure the win as they capitalized on two bad passes by MiraCosta with the final one defended by Jamario Harris in the final 13.4 seconds that resulted in turnovers allowing the Comets to finish off the win. The Comets collected 26 defensive rebounds (38 total rebounds) led by Matt Meyers with 9 (13 total) and 4 steals (Anthony Brewer with 2 off the bench).

The Comets take this exciting win into Thursday the 15th, where they will be playing for a chance at a play-in game for the playoffs. The comets are now 15-13 (5-5 for their last 10) sitting 4th in their division looking to play another great game on Thursday against the 1-22 College of the Desert.
