Meyers (28 pts), PC rally, win in 46th Grossmont Tournament

EL CAJON (12-01-2017) -- Matt Meyers scored 17 of his 28 points in the second half on Friday and Palomar's men's basketball team rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to down Santa Monica 70-66 at Griffin Gym in the first round of the 46th Grossmont College Tournament.

The 6-foot-8 Meyers also contributed 7 of his 8 rebounds in the second half. For the game, he went 7-for-14 from the field and drew fouls by taking the ball to the basket. He went 14-for-19 from the free throw line.

Jackson Strong (17 points, 7 rebounds) and Jamario Harris (11 points, 5 assists) also scored in double figures as coach John O'Neill's squad ran its season record to 5-3. Corday Fairley and Anthony Brewer added 6 points each.

Palomar trailed until Brewer hit a 3-point jumper with 2:26 remaining in the second half off Meyers' assist to put the Comets in front 65-63.

The victory puts the Comets into the championship semifinals on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Griffin Gym against the host Griffins. Grossmont opened tournament play by defeating Victor Valley 70-63.

The Grffins enter Saturday night's game with a 7-2 record.
